Identifying the ultrametricity of time series
نویسنده
چکیده
High dimensional, sparsely populated data spaces have been characterized in terms of ultrametric topology. There are natural, not necessarily unique, tree or hierarchy structures defined by the ultrametric topology. Once such a structure is known, and can be defined, there are various implications including the feasibility of improved computational complexity for operations such as nearest neighbor searching. In this work, we consider the case where the data under investigation is temporal data, in the form of a time series. We develop an approach to characterizing how well time series data can be embedded in an ultrametric topology. Possible applications of this work include: (i) unique fingerprinting of a time series; (ii) discriminating between time series from various domains; and (iii) if data are inherently hierarchical, then using such hierarchies to model and predict. Ultrametricity in Data: Identifying and Exploiting Local and Global Hierarchical Structure
We begin with pervasive ultrametricity due to high dimensionality and/or spatial sparsity. How extent or degree of ultrametricity can be quantified leads us to the discussion of varied practical cases when ultrametricity can be partially or locally present in data. We show how the ultrametricity can be assessed in text or document collections, and in time series signals.

متن کاملIdentifying the Ultrametricity of Networks
High dimensional, sparsely populated data spaces have been characterized in terms of ultrametric topology. This implies that there are natural, not necessarily unique, tree or hierarchy structures defined by the ultrametric topology. The extent to which time series can be embedded in an ultrametric topology was also studied recently, with the aim of finding unique “fingerprints” for a time seri...
متن کاملThe Remarkable Simplicity of Very High Dimensional Data: Application of Model-Based Clustering
An ultrametric topology formalizes the notion of hierarchical structure. An ultrametric embedding, referred to here as ultrametricity, is implied by a hierarchical embedding. Such hierarchical structure can be global in the data set, or local. By quantifying extent or degree of ultrametricity in a data set, we show that ultrametricity becomes pervasive as dimensionality and/or spatial sparsity ...
متن کاملUltrametric Embedding: Application to Data Fingerprinting and to Fast Data Clustering
Data is naturally ultrametric when high dimensional and/or sparse. Local ultrametricity of data can be increased by appropriate data coding. New perspectives on data analysis, and on data analysis algorithms, are opened up by these findings. We discuss data recoding, in order to increase local ultrametricity of data, using time series signals, and texts, of various origins. We then look at how ...
